Sophia Maldonado - "Fem Trap"

Point Green

260 Java Street, Brooklyn NY 11222

Opening June 10th , 5-9PM

We invite you to join us at Point Green for the debut of Sofia Maldonado’s new work created in residency, as well as a music-filled celebration of Trap.

“Fem Trap” is a championing of the young hispanic female Youtube stars of the Trap genre, many of whom remain underrepresented. A large-scale mural detail of her abstraction will be displayed in the gallery space, along with a series of small drawings based on her anthropological investigation of the hispanic female Trap artist. In addition, Sofia Maldonado will create an interactive video installation, along with small run of limited edition goods such as skate decks, apparel, and other items. The items exude the synth-driven energy of the genre and the power of its performers.

Sofia Maldonado (b. 1984, lives and works between Puerto Rico & New York), deconstructs the barrier between murals, public art and social engagement projects. In 2012, the artist’s changing views and perspective on urban landscapes prompts her to move her art studio to Puerto Rico. Her visual language opens a dialogue about space defined by color, abstraction and human interaction. She conceptualizes empty structures as gigantic canvases that can be transformed by a vigorous painting process and luscious colors.

Maldonado holds an M.F.A from Pratt Institute (2008), is a recipient of the Manhattan Community Arts Fund Grant, was a fellow at the Vermont Studio Center Residency, and at La Práctica at Beta- Local, Puerto Rico. Youth movements, such as skateboarding, influenced her earlier works and allowed her to create numerous community projects in New York along with The Bronx Museum, Times Square Alliance, Groundswell Community Mural Project, No Longer Empty and many others. Real Arts Ways and Foundation for Puerto Rico had funded important public projects by the artist as well.

Her first solo museum exhibition took place at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Puerto Rico (2012). She has also exhibited at the Museum of Art and Design and El Museo del Barrio, New York, The Kentucky Museum of Art  and  Craft,  The Ringling  Museum, in Sarasota,  10th  Havana Biennial, in Cuba, The Modern Art Atlantic Centre, Spain, El Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, and at the 1st Biennale de Asunción.

Her work is currently on display as part of Debtfair (2017), a project by Occupy Museum at the Whitney Biennial.

Point Green is an interdisciplinary artist-run space dedicated to helping artists at every level of their career.
